Sausage & Mash, 28 Feb 2007

I've been looking forward to a spot of S&M ever since I first saw the café about 9 months ago, and have had to wait until my eighth lunch here before I could try it.

There is a menu with things other than sausages, which includes pies, but also a number of black pudding dishes; there is also a specials board. However, for the main event, there are about a dozen different sausages, including specials. There are about five different mashes, and a number of different gravies. The basic meal then is to have two or three sausages, specific mash and gravy.

I had three Somerset sausages (pork with cider), bubble and squeak mash and normal gravy. It was washed down with a Sprite, and followed by an espresso. The sausages were firm, well cooked and with a hint of Somerset, although not of a large size. The mash was scattered with cabbage and peas, and made a nice change from from your normal mash. There was also a choice of about four mustards on the table - I had the honey mustard, which was fantastic.

Just think, the possible combinations of the different sausages, mashes, gravies and mustard could keep a sausage anorac busy for years!

Cost was £6.95 for two sausages, mash and gravy, £7.95 for three. It's also £1 cheaper if you have the "house" sausage.

Another trip beckons soon!
