Arkansas Cafe, 14 Mar 2007

Getting towards the end of my tour, I've spied the Arkansas Cafe with its barbeque outside for a while. It is situated at the back of the market alongside the Mediterranean Café and Square Pie. At first appearance, all you can see is the bbq kit - there are no tables to be seen. However, you are directed through to the back, where there is a very quaint old room with a bar and a series of tables.

The menu is good American fare - hot dogs, ribs, steak, etc etc. My dining partner and I both went for the burger in a homemade bun, paying extra for cheese and a rasher of bacon (£6 for the burger, 60p for the cheese and £1 for the bacon). We also went for mash to accompany it - they don't do chips, but we could have had coleslaw and other selections instead. On the table was a box with French's mustard, Tabasco, ketchup, Colman’s' English mustard and other sauces. The cafe is licensed, and that meant we had to try some American Beer - we went for Lone Star.

I was disappointed with the small amount of cheese melted on top of the burger; the bacon looked nicely grilled. I put French's mustard on top of the bacon and ate it the only way you can - with your hands! The flavour of the beef, bacon, cheese and mustard together with the soft bun was deliciously smokey. The burger was cooked just right - pink in the middle; we weren't asked how we liked ours cooked, so if you like yours different from this, I suggest you specify! The mash was sweet and smooth (a few lumps, but not the purée you get in France).

The beer was typically American (Americans are the only people who can call Budweiser beer), i.e. weak, but OK, given it was weekday lunchtime!

This is definitely on the list to return......
