This has to be the one! Verde & Co is an old shop with baskets of fruit outside, between The Sausage and Mash Café and Salad & Soup. When I went in, the sandwiches were the most expensive I have seen - between about £4.50 and £5.50. Despite this, I stuck with it, and ordered smoked chicken with guacamole, and a blood orange. When I was ordering, someone else ordered "half salami, half roast beef", which puzzled me somewhat.
The half portions became evident when I saw them being served up. A half portion consists of two slices of wholemeal bread of oval shape at least 6" by 4", and including filling, over 2" thick. Therefore a whole portion comprises the biggest sandwich I've ever had. The chicken was lightly smoked and not overpowering, the guacamole was chunky and the salad crisp and fresh. The blood orange was deliciously tangy, without being too sharp.
In terms of sandwich for your pound, this takes a lot of beating. A half sandwich at say £2.65 would be good, or go for the full one to either share, or just for yourself if you're hungry.....
I later went to Verde for a coffee (white americano), which at £2.00 was quite expensive. However, the strength was spot on for me, and the flavour made it one of the best coffees I've had in a long time.

Seriously prententious gaff with equally poncey staff. The menu continues the theme with some ridiculous sandwhich concoctions. No plain old ham and cheese for Verde, it's parma ham and parmesan. Oh, and make sure you know your bread - the poor girl behind me got laughed at when she couldn't tell the difference between wholegrain and granary!!
I went for the richer than Bill Gates option of chorizo and gorgonzola with chilli jam. The portions certainly are large but at £7 for a sarnie and juice they blumin' well should be. That said, it was a damn fine sarnie. Delicious chorizo and not too heavy on the cheese, although enough to make any lesser man heave. Richness was nicely offset by the superb blood orange juice.
In sum...pretentious, poncey and pricey but pretty darn tasty.
